In the second season of Dark Angel, we learnt of the Familiars; a secret cult of people with abilities of mental and physical strength that match, if not surpass that of the transgenics. While the transgenics were created in laboratories via in scientific experiments that spanned a couple of decades, the familiars have come into their power through generations of selective breeding (a procedure not unlike that used to produce top of the line, pedigree animals) that has spanned thousands of years. By the second to last episode of season two we learnt that the famliliars and transgenics are infact related. The creator of the transgenics, known only as Sandeman, was once a familiar himself, but he was excommunicated from the cult after trying to persuade the Conclave to discard their old-fashioned (and slow) methods of selective-breeding, and embrace science and technology to strengthen the species instead. The Conclave refused Sandeman, but he began work on the transgenics himself, until he was at last forced to abandon the project completely and go underground.
For thousands of years the familiars have been preparing for the fulfillment of a prophesy; an apocolypic event which will wipe humanity off the face of the Earth. They're dead set on taking our place as the dominant species but the thing is, they don't want to share the pedistal with their assembly-line cousins either, especially once they learn that Max holds in her genetic cocktail, the code which may very well save humanity. Transgenics vs Familiars. It's survival of the fittest...
